Carter Page: No Russians Asked Me to Do ‘Anything Illegal, Illicit’

President Donald Trump’s former campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page on Thursday denied he was ever approached by Russians to do anything illicit or illegal, and the FBI’s surveillance of him started “months” before a report, citing leaks from an intelligence community source and a disputed dossier, indicated a probe was taking place to investigate ties between him and the Kremlin.

“I have always followed the law both in this country and everywhere,” Page told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo. “I probably spent more time than any Trump supporter that’s known in Russia in 2016 and not one time did anyone ask me to do anything illicit, illegal, even unethical in any way.”

Meanwhile, British spy Christopher Steele, whose wrote the dossier was being paid undercover through a law firm to do opposition research and “funnel it back,” Page said.

Page said after the dossier became public through the media, he started getting death threats and had to “go low profile,” and even though he tried telling then-FBI Director James Comey about the “witch hunt” after Yahoo News wrote about the dossier, “they did nothing.”

Page added he has never discussed the matter, or anything else, with Trump, as he has never spoken to him before or after the election.

“As President-elect Trump said in the Hilton late on election night, this isn’t a campaign, this is a movement,” Page said. “I was just part of a team of people that really loved what he was talking about in terms of the initiatives for our country and, you know, I just wanted to help in any way I can.”
