Former Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh Announces Primary Challenge Against Trump

“He’s nuts. He’s erratic. He’s cruel. He stokes bigotry. He’s incompetent. He doesn’t know what he’s doing,” Walsh told ABC’s “This Week.” The longshot portrayed himself as a legitimate alternative in party where he said many are opposed to Trump but are “scared to death” of saying so publicly.

His campaign slogan: “Be brave.”

Polls shows Trump is backed by most Republican voters, and the lone rival already in the race is former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, the 2016 Libertarian Party vice presidential nominee who is regarded as fiscally conservative but socially liberal.

Undeterred from pressing ahead with his candidacy, Walsh said, “I think this thing … will catch on like wildfire.” The former Trump booster added: “I’m a conservative. And I think there’s a decent chance to present to Republican voters a conservative without all the baggage.”

Walsh narrowly won a House seat from suburban Chicago in the 2010 tea party wave but lost a 2012 reelection bid and has since hosted a radio talk show. He has a history of inflammatory statements regarding Muslims and others and declared just before the 2016 election that if Trump lost, “I’m grabbing my musket.”

But he has since soured on Trump, criticizing the president over growth of the federal deficit and writing in a New York Times column that the president was “a racial arsonist who encourages bigotry and xenophobia to rouse his base.”

The road ahead for any Republican primary challenger will be difficult.

In recent months, Trump’s allies have taken over state parties that control primary elections in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and elsewhere. State party leaders sometimes pay lip service to the notion that they would welcome a primary challenger, as their state party rules usually require, but they are already working to ensure Trump’s reelection.

South Carolina Republicans have gone so far as to discuss canceling their state’s GOP primary altogether if a legitimate primary challenge emerges to eliminate the threat.

At the same time, polling consistently shows that Trump has the solid backing of an overwhelming majority of Republican voters. An Associated Press-NORC poll conducted this month found that 78% of Republicans approve of Trump’s job performance. That number has been hovering around 80% even as repeated scandals have rocked his presidency.

“Look, this isn’t easy to do. … I’m opening up my life to tweets and attacks. Everything I’ve said and tweeted now, Trump’s going to go after, and his bullies are going to go after,” Walsh said.

Asked whether he was prepared for that, Walsh replied: “Yes, I’m ready for it.”

Walsh, 57, rode a wave of anti-President Barack Obama sentiment to a 300-vote victory over a Democratic incumbent in the 2010 election. He made a name for himself in Washington as a cable news fixture who was highly disparaging of Obama.

Walsh was criticized for saying that the Democratic Party’s “game” is to make Latinos dependent on government just like “they got African Americans dependent upon government.” At another point, he said radical Muslims are in the U.S. “trying to kill Americans every week,” including in Chicago’s suburbs.

He lost his 2012 reelection bid by more than 20,000 votes to Democrat Tammy Duckworth, who was elected to the U.S. Senate four years later.

Walsh told Obama to “watch out” on Twitter in July 2016 after five police officers were killed in Dallas. Just days before Trump’s 2016 win over Hillary Clinton, Walsh tweeted: “On November 8th, I’m voting for Trump. On November 9th, if Trump loses, I’m grabbing my musket. You in?” Walsh later said on Twitter that he was referring to “acts of civil disobedience.”

On Sunday, Walsh said he apologized for past divisive comments.

“I helped create Trump. There’s no doubt about that, the personal, ugly politics. I regret that. And I’m sorry for that,” he said.

    1. Trump became rich by cheating others, that’s what he did all his business career. Multiple business bankrupts so he did not have to pay the banks, the carpenters, window installers, carpet installers, plumbers, electricians, painters, floor installers, security guards, general labors who worked on his luxurious buildings. Trump is a swindler.

  1. Hum, so he’s from Illinois… He’s critical of Trump when Trump is keeping his campaign promises. So what’s Walsh’s beef? Trump’s personality? Well… Mr. Walsh, what’s your record? What do you have to offer? You’ve criticized Muslims and so has Trump. As far as Trump being a “bigot”? Where’s the proof? I only see another interloper who wants to divide the GOP… In case you haven’t noticed, Trump’s popularity is soaring and money is coming into his campaign from areas he didn’t win in 2016, more than what the Democrats raked in… You’re in this more to make a name for yourself than anything else… Go pound sand. You’re looking at Humiliation unless you’re in it for the campaign funds…

  2. Really… I thought when I saw that you were going to try to take on our President…goood, for you, if you have something good for America! let’s hear it!!! Then I start to read your comments and are the nut..the troublemaker…go away!!!!!!

  3. He’s as big an idiot as Romney who is collaborating with the a top socialist communists dems to try to beat the President. He is an idiot. If he screws things up we will be all living under sharia law, lots of crime ,no money, no freedom and everything else bad.

  4. Joe Walsh…besides being against President Trump, what does he stand for? He sounds like an “Aniti-Democrat”
ad spewing anti-Trumps one-liners to generate attention to himself using Trump as his punching bag. Not very creative, and intellectually barren. Run for the roundhouse Joe, they can’t corner you there!

  5. Another idiot taking on Trump? How STUPID is that?!? Probably another RINO. He’ll never get my vote. He’s ugly too, POOR FELLA . . . Team Trump and his allies 2020.

  6. Wow,
This guy is a master at self-delusion, projection, a narcissist and most certainly cannot tie his own shoes if that is his true analysis of President Donald Trump. I doubt he truly believes one word of his anti-Trump sentiment but is delusional enough to believe that he needs all of it to appease the others………..Those from another realm/society that reside within our borders and whom we must convert or send packing on the next successful launch to outer space from wince they came. You know who I am alluding to: The Radical Left Wing Progressive Socialist Democrats, the delusional human beings (that may be in debate as well) that spout the ruination theory (if everything is free all will be well-Socialism for America) of our Democratic Republic! America will never be a Socialist country because America will never be lost by we, the heritage supporting/believing red, white and blue patriots who love “In God We Trust” and are thankful everyday for the brilliance of our founding fathers, flaws and all. There has never been a greater nation, unfortunately Conservatives took that for granted and became lazy/complacent with their citizen’s duties (performing due diligence in choosing and voting for Conservative candidates) and are now are in an internal battle to keep our heritage based America in place and intact. Rest assured it is a battle we must win!

2020 is a must vote/win for Conservatives across the political board and the next 12 months a must push to educate our brainwashed youth to the facts concerning all nations that have succumbed to Socialism. The populations of those countries become subjugated to a Socialist Dictator and his elite inner circle, they lose all their political power, corruption prevails and their economy falters and as in the latest example “Venezuela” disappears all together; the people give up (without a fight and that is what the Socialist Dictator counts on) and mass migrate out of the country. In the end both lose, the people and eventually the Dictator as he and his elite drain the country of what is left and then wallow in their plight!

However, some of Mr. Walsh’s past political statements outside his off-the-wall anti-Trump rhetoric concerning that other (now extremely divided political party) have some truth and merit to them but have been labeled inflammatory. The motives for actions by that political party are exactly as he has pointed out, but he is completely off-base concerning President Donald Trump. For example, Obama was anti-law enforcement as stated by Mr. Walsh and overall Obama was anti-heritage based America, period! The ole guard Democratic political party platform and motives to create and keep a massive number of minority’s as welfare recipients, poor educational opportunities for inner-city populations (keep them poor and dumb) and the goals of hard line Islamic, Sharia Law only Muslims within our borders have proven to be correct as well. As is always the case , the Left will deny those statements to their graves even though they prove it is their reality on a 24/7 basis.

Too bad he is so far off base on the man, motives, performance and successes of a red, white, and blue Patriot President as President Donald Trump is. Mr. Walsh, better wake-up and have a serious talk with a savvy, red. white and blue Conservative political strategist as your current maniacal ranting about our President is CRAZY man, CRAZY!!!!!!!!!

  7. I do not for one minute believe that this poor excuse for a man has any motive for his “change of heart” other than being paid a hefty sum for his sudden decision to advocate against our president. I’ll bet that when we look into his sources of finances (and we will), we’ll see the same ones that fund the left. Now they are so desperate to stop what is coming that they will lie down with the enemies of freedom. Lap dog…

  8. Keep up the great work President Trump! The best President ever! Not to mention the first lady she’s the best too! Now that America is great again, let’s keep it that way! Trump 2020!

  9. Well I think the musician Joe Walsh would be a better choice than the former Rep. Joe Walsh. He’s joined the ranks of those screaming “racist” about President Trump, while he has a history of Islamophobia (although being critical of Islam is not necessarily wrong). Trump is against people of any ethnic type coming into this country illegally. That seems to make him a racist.
President Trump’s chances of reelection are growing stronger all the time. I think the more his enemies yell and scream, the more popular he becomes. Now if someone could explain to AOC that it takes a Constitutional Amendment to end the Electoral College, we can get on with our lives.

  10. All that cocaine that Joe Walsh reportedly snorted up his nose, back in the 70’s and 80’s, have apparently taken a toll on him… Joe, do you really think that America will listen to a drug user that should stay in his lane? Of course, all the Hollywood idiots that condone your lifestyle, they will agree with you, yet no one that I associate with… People with integrity, hard working folks, military veterans, etc…. Just aren’t buying what you are selling!
