YouTube Bans Conservative Channels as “White Supremacist” Crackdown Continues

Update (1900ET): Molyneux has released a video statement on twitter, asking his fans to “stay in the conversation” while bemoaning the loss of “thousands of hours of work”, which was destroyed along with his YouTube archives.

He also rejected the accusation that he advocated violence, saying he has always “advanced the non-aggression principle”.

His account had nearly 1 million subscribers.

Richard Spencer, the American neo-nazi whose media bromance with ‘edgy’ digital-media outlets like Vice and Buzzfeed (along with mainstream outlets like CNN) helped bring him to national attention in the aftermath of President Trump’s electoral victory, has been de-platformed from YouTube, joining a group of other far-right figures like Alex Jones, as well as sympathizers of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The Verge reports that Spencer has been banned, along with David Duke (currently the subject of Slate’s popular “Slow Burn” podcast series) and Stefan Molyneux, a popular conservative voice on twitter and other platforms. Additionally, Spencer’s American Renaissance (with its associated channel AmRen Podcasts) and the channel for his infamously vaguely named National Policy Institute. All of the banned channels repeatedly violated YouTube’s policies, a YouTube spokesperson said. All the channels allegedly said that protected classes were inferior, according to the spokesperson.

“We have strict policies prohibiting hate speech on YouTube, and terminate any channel that repeatedly or egregiously violates those policies,” a YouTube spokesperson told The Verge. “After updating our guidelines to better address supremacist content, we saw a 5x spike in video removals and have terminated over 25,000 channels for violating our hate speech policies.”

Spencer is best known perhaps for being punched in the face on camera during the protests surrounding President Trump’s inauguration in DC on Jan 2017. He also was a “featured speaker” at the far-right rallies in Charlottesville during the summer in 2017 where one counter-protester was killed.

YouTube began its crackdown on ‘white supremacist channels’ in June 2019 following complaints from progressive pundits that the platform had become a breeding ground for radical right-wing views, a situation that the company immediately moved to correct, censoring countless innocent conservative channels in the process.

The company issued updated rules barring “videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status.”

Spencer has already claimed he will appeal the suspension.

Molyneux tweeted that YouTube “just suspended the largest philosophy conversation the world has ever known.”

While YouTube’s push to filter ‘hateful’ content is certainly well-intentioned, many libertarian-leaning thinkers oppose such an active level of censorship on a platform with ‘monopolistic’ reach.

Senate Republicans are pushing legislation that will modify liability protections enjoyed by social media platforms like Facebook and YouTube, making them contingent on a set of standards that all platforms will need to follow, including standards surrounding the limited occasions when content should be allowed to be removed.

  1. Move over to Paler which permits freedom of speech. My problem with Paler is I cannot get on. The Captcha just circles for ever and does not pass me through. I have been trying off and on to get on for a couple of months now.

    1. I had the same problem. At least two months of issues before I got on. Nothing worked right. First it would not allow my password then when I tried to reset my pw, it would not send the required reset email.

Next month I tried again and the emails got to me but they didn’t work. Finally, for whoknowswhy reason, I got my password reset worked.

      Who knows why?

    1. No Jim, that will not happen. Did you see they are planning to paint the NBA floors either black or yellow with the letters BLM in the center. Yet these same people will not recognize our national anthem. I just watched Uncle Joe on Fox off and on. He talks like the looney bin is awaiting his appearance. Good luck America. RVN 68-69

  2. When one looks at the statement made by You Tube as to what is qualifying content for exclusion: “videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion based on qualities like age, gender, race, caste, religion, sexual orientation or veteran status”, one can see how any Christian videos could be included as one of the tenets of the Christian faith is that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Thus, any video that includes quotes such as Jesus declaring “I am the way , the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through me” (John 14:6, New International Version) and/or “Salvation is found in no one else for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12, NIV), will be potentially banned as hate speech under the above established criteria. This of course is a gross and blatant violation of the First Amendment’s freedom of speech and religion provisions. If we are not vigilant and verbose we will assuredly find ourselves muzzled and suffering the same discriminations that You Tube and other outlets are allegedly seeking to prevent.

  4. This is the stupidest shit yet . White hate groups are just like the black hate groups . Kkk or the BLM what does it matter their both hate racists groups trying to get power to control others . If you laugh at them and just walk away , they go away to . Stop giving them the power they want . It’s bad enough that the delusional democrats do

  5. This is lack of freedom of speech. Channels I watch that are Conservative just report the truth and actually document their sources for fact checking. They never express white supremacy or hate speech like I see on liberal channels all the time. Liberal channels stay up, never get sanctioned, and stay monetized. Conservative channels are always taken down, fined or demonetized and there is a consistent pattern of censorship. I don’t know why the DOJ doesn’t change section 230 because the social platforms are not publishing different viewpoints Allowing free speech but Censor, censor, censor! There is no alternative social media site because these companies are run by sociopaths and let AI run free reign over whatever they wish to censor. America wake up! The Orwellian society is coming for you and you will lose your chance to save our freedoms forever. You must join in protests no matter who you affiliate with because you must wake up!! Censorship in any social platform affects you too! How would you like to see your favorite channels forever gone due to censorship, and you let it all happen without decrying the criminal acts they perpetuate. The Bill of Rights will fall to the wayside as we slip into communism quickly.
